With reference to Colonial Office letter No.53838/10/38
10 of the 13th April, regarding the Japanese Government's request
that British junks should be marked and British vessels
directed to follow a special route when entering or leaving
Hong Kong, I am directed by Viscount Halifax to transmit to
you herewith copy of a telegram which has now been sent to
His Majesty's Ambassador at Tokyo on this subject.
2. The Board of Trade have suggested and Lord Halifax
agrees that it might be useful if information could be obtained
as to the amount of British shipping which will be affected
by the notice which it is proposed to issue and as to the
extent to which proposed course represents a departure from
their normal practice. If the Secretary of State for the
Colonies sees no objection, I am accordingly to suggest that
the Governor of Hong Kong should be invited by telegram to
furnish this information.
3. Copies of this letter have been sent to the Board of
Trade and Admiralty.
The Under-Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I am,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant.
R. Howe
